Description
1936 Chantier de la Liane Custom Teak Yawl – "KERTIOS"

Holding the official French designation of Bateau d’Intérêt Patrimonial (Heritage Boat), Kertios is a 17.5-meter offshore cruiser-racer built in 1936 by the Chantier de la Liane shipyard in Marseille. Constructed to a high-quality standard under Lloyds Register specifications by naval architect Lomakhine, this vessel features a design inspired by a classic Nicholson plan. Originally rigged as a sloop, Kertios was converted to a yawl rig during the 1960s to allow for easier sail handling and adjustment.

Construction & Hull Specifications

The structural design and material choices of Kertios reflect traditional mid-century maritime craftsmanship:

  • Hull Composition: The hull is constructed entirely from Burmese teak, utilizing 40mm and 36mm planks secured with copper rivets. The structural framework consists of double sawn oak frames alternating with two steam-bent acacia frames.

  • Keel & Ballast: Features a classic solid oak keel paired with a formal 8.5-tonne lead ballast keel secured by bronze bolts.

  • Rudder Assembly: Constructed of solid oak, outfitted with a stainless steel-sleeved stock (installed 1991) and a stainless steel trunk tube (installed 2011).

  • Maintenance & Upgrades: To minimize ongoing maintenance, all historical galvanized steel and lead components have been systematically replaced with 316L stainless steel. This includes the stanchions, bases, shrouds, turnbuckles, bow rollers, rudder sleeve, and all onboard tanks. The brightwork superstructures are maintained using a specialized satin-finish teak oil rather than traditional high-build varnish.

Rigging & Sail Inventory

Kertios is configured with a traditional auxiliary yawl gréement, utilizing spruce spars throughout:

  • Main Mast: Keel-stepped spruce mast with two levels of spreaders, single-strand stainless steel standing rigging with Hasselfors turnbuckles, and two bronze halyard winches (including one two-speed winch).

  • Mizzen Mast: Spruce mast with a single level of spreaders (installed 2026), stainless steel standing rigging, and a bronze halyard winch.

  • Sail Inventory: Equipment includes a mainsail, a furling genoa paired with a Profurl electric roller furling system, an unused storm jib, a mizzen sail, a 185 $m^2$ spinnaker with a retrieval sock, an adjustable fisherman sail, and older medium-wear sails (yankee and boom-footed staysail). A legacy set of cotton sails (storm jib, staysail, No. 2 jib) is also retained.

Propulsion & Machinery
  • Auxiliary Engine: Powered by a Perkins 4-236 marine diesel engine delivering 80 horsepower. The engine has recorded approximately 2,000 operational hours.

  • Transmission & Line: Equipped with a Borg-Warner hydraulic gearbox, stainless steel propeller shaft, and a traditional bronze stern tube and stuffing box assembly.

  • Ancillary Machinery: Features a heavy-duty Hyland hydraulic anchor windlass driven by an independent hydraulic circuit.

Accommodations & Layout

The traditional interior is crafted from solid Burmese teak and solid mahogany, providing formal berths for up to 9 occupants across two accommodation levels:

  • Forward Quarters: Features a dedicated forward cabin (traditionally allocated for crew access via a forward deck hatch) configured with a double berth, wardrobe, and hanging lockers.

  • Owner’s Cabin: Outfitted with a large double berth to starboard, writing desk, vanity unit with an integrated washbasin, and extensive storage lockers.

  • Main Salon: Designed in a traditional layout featuring parallel port and starboard settees/berths flanking a double-drop-leaf teak dining table, complete with built-in bookshelves and exposed overhead beams.

  • Galley: Fully equipped with a stainless steel gimbaled stove and oven, a multi-source refrigerator (operable via 12V, 220V, or gas), and a stainless steel sink plumbed for both fresh and sea water.

  • Heads: A dedicated compartment containing a manual bronze and porcelain marine toilet, washbasin, and shower.

  • Navigation Station: Situated on the upper cabin level beneath the coach roof, featuring a full-sized chart table, navigator's berth, and comprehensive electronics panel.

Systems & Navigation Electronics
  • Electrical Network: Built around a primary 24-volt DC system supported by four 100Ah service batteries, a 24V-220V inverter, and a 220V shore power connection. Charging is managed via an engine alternator, a Motorola shaft-line alternator, and a Victron Skylla 30A automatic battery charger.

  • Tankage: Comprises two interconnected stainless steel fuel tanks totalling 400 litres. Fresh water storage totals 460 litres across two stainless steel tanks (250L/60L) and two flexible bladders (100L/50L). A bronze grey-water sump tank holds roughly 80 litres.

  • Navigation Suite: Equipped with a Sestrel Major binnacle compass, Moore compass, Aquameter internal repeaters, VDO and Chorus log-speedometers, Chorus wind-speed/direction indicators, a Raytheon paper-chart graphic depth recorder, Garmin GPS Map 220, Shipmate weather receiver, Neco autopilot, and a classic Sailor HF/SSB receiver and transceiver suite.
