Description
For sale,
Beautiful Chassiron GT 38 (Hull number 22), certified Heritage Interest Vessel (BIP) since 2024.
Designed by architect Michel Joubert in collaboration with Édouard Richard (Chantiers de Marennes, 1979), this archetype of the "French heavy cruiser" is a formidable high-seas vessel.
It was designed for long-distance travel, with absolute priorities of safety in rough seas and comfort.
It is a living boat, which sails regularly and is in very good cosmetic and structural condition.
Its recent journey attests to this: after acquiring it in Nieuport, Belgium, I based it in Dunkirk, from where I made a beautiful round trip to Amsterdam in 2024.
In August 2025, I finally completed the delivery from Dunkirk to La Rochelle, thus closing the loop by bringing it back to its original waters.
The absolute rarity of this unit lies in its rigging: Achab is one of the very few models originally built as a Sloop (the vast majority of GT 38s being rigged as ketches). This configuration elongates its elegant line.
Overall length: 12 m (longer than the ketch versions at 11.40 m)
Waterline length: 10.50 m
Beam: 3.60 m
Displacement: 11 Tons
Construction: Very robust polyester hull, combined with a deck mounted on traditional wooden framing (illustrating the technological transition of the 70s).
Mast: Solid Marco Polo aluminum mast.
I am the 3rd owner (for 5 years). The boat has a beautiful maritime history: after a first owner in South Brittany, its second owners passionately took it to the North Sea, to London and Sweden, before I brought it back from Belgium to Charente-Maritime.
I have 30 years of maintenance and repair invoices carefully kept in binders by the previous owner.
The boat has almost always been wintered in a dry shed.
Its original teak deck has been superbly preserved thanks to this dry wintering, refreshed by me with D1/D2 every year, including for the 2026 season.
The boat stands out for its exceptional state of preservation.
To date, all of the interior woodwork, crafted by the carpenters of Chantiers Richard, is not only in very good condition but completely original. Period elements have been preserved or restored (copper switches and lamps, solid brass through-hulls) and anachronistic plastic additions have been removed to restore its warm and nominal charm.
Currently moored in the yacht basin, right in the city center of La Rochelle (Place Y1).
Being the owner of ACHAB is a true commitment to transmission.
It awaits its 4th owner to continue writing its story.

Best regards.
