La Grande Zot is a 16-meter auric gaff rigged schooner, emblematic of Ajaccio's maritime heritage, distinguished as much by its strong identity as by its sailing history and commitment. With a total length of 23 meters from the tip of the bowsprit to the end of the boom, and a beam of 4 meters, it offers an elegant and powerful silhouette, characteristic of large traditional Mediterranean vessels. Its auric rig, composed of two quadrangular lugsails and triangular foresails including a boomless staysail, develops approximately 166 m² of canvas. The varnished wooden masts, redone in 2020 and rising to 17 meters from the keel base, fully contribute to its authentic character. Here, no superfluous modern assistance: the maneuvers are done the old-fashioned way, without winches or furlers, with a pulley system that prioritizes the feeling of pure and physical sailing.

This sailing vessel is not limited to remarkable aesthetics. It is a recognized sailing unit, engaged in classic regattas, notably during the Corsica Classic where it excelled with a first place in the auric category in a previous edition and a second place in 2025. Capable of reaching 10 knots on a broad reach, it demonstrates solid performance against more contemporary units, while maintaining a metal tiller steering faithful to traditions. Regularly highlighted by regional media such as France 3 Corse Via Stella or Corse Matin, it enjoys local notoriety that enhances its value and credibility.

On board, the organization is designed for life at sea and crew accommodation. The boat has three crew cabins with two berths each, as well as an owner's aft cabin. The kitchen is located to port, with ample storage, two coolers, and a small refrigerator, while the starboard berths complete the sleeping area. Two bathrooms are present, a manual toilet at the front and an electric toilet in the cabin. The service batteries are installed under the starboard bed of the owner's cabin. The whole is complemented by a 300-liter diesel tank, a Seatronic solar installation with two recent panels, a portable generator, a fixed and mobile VHF, a distress beacon, as well as navigation equipment including compass and GPS.

The deck and external equipment testify to regular and functional use. The boat has a motorized dinghy. The lazy bags have been recently replaced, and several structural elements such as the stay, the lower shrouds, and the shrouds have been renewed. The antifouling and maintenance were carried out in early April, confirming active upkeep. Some ropes are new, and two sets of mainsails, beige and burgundy, are part of the inventory.

Beyond its technical characteristics, La Grande Zot carries a story, an identity, and a community. Crewed for years by a dedicated team around figures such as its historical owner and its captain, it brings together a strong human network, making it much more than just a sailing boat. It is part of the tradition of large Mediterranean schooners, between heritage, transmission, and active sailing.
