HOEK is a prestigious Dutch naval design studio specialized in the building of "classic-modern" sailboats from 33 feet to up to 200. Their boats are real works of art, combining the stylized and elegant aesthetics of the classics above the waterline, with modern hull designs, fast and efficient, underwater.
Unlike many of Hoek's designs in these lengths, which are typically built in aluminum, "Braveheart" was built in fiberglass and vinylester. Her owner - an expert sailor who actively participated in her design - made the decision to commission the building of his boat in this materials in order to avoid the typical corrosion problems and, therefore, the higher maintenance costs that many aluminum boats suffer from, as well as the risk of osmosis of fiber boats. Her rigging, designed to sail with a small crew, and her complete equipment, provide a lot of comfort during the navigation and brings great autonomy to enjoy long stays on board.

Deck:

Completely lined with Burmese teak, she features many elements from classic boats that make this Hoek a true beauty, such as the cockpit and the perfectly varnished gunwale. A especial mention has to be given to the classic glass hatches with bars, gorgeous frames and coamings; or the chrome-plated vents and the robust stainless steel pulleys and hardware. The deck ends in a very generous toe rail, and above it some stanchions and a handrail high enough to allow movements on the deck during the navigation in complete safety. Ahead of the main cabin, under the boom, there is a cradle for the storage of a good-sized tender. There are many flat areas to sunbathe comfortably. After the anchor well there is a large forepeak locker, which can also be converted into a crew cabin.

The cockpit is very spacious and comfortable for a classic design. It has a large central table with folding wings and two seats along the sides, under which several lockers for storage are located. The boat's wheel is placed at the end of the cockpit, with a classic binnacle that supports the impressive varnished wooden wheel. The skipper has foot buttons to control some essential maneuvers at his disposal, and on the sides of the wheel, perfectly integrated, we can find the engine and bow thruster controls and several data repeater displays for the electronics and VHF control.

Above the cockpit, a robust tent made of steel structure protects the cockpit from the sun and the rain. Although this bimini is not part of Hoek's original design, it is perfectly integrated into the whole design, as a lighter extension of the interior bridge. It is very practical and functional, since it also has canvas sides with transparent windows around its entire perimeter, which effectively protect the entire cockpit and the steering area.

The entire maneuvering of the boat is set to be able to sail with a small crew and for not having to get out of the cockpit in bad weather. It has hydraulic furlers on both the mainsail and the two headsails and hydraulic winches for all maneuvers. The staysail has a self-tacking mechanism, which greatly simplifies maneuvers in strong winds. The carbon mast is a wonder, as it considerably reduces the weight of all the rigging and greatly improves the behaviour of the boat, especially when sailing with a headwind. During the navigation, the entire maneuver is easily controlled from the cockpit, allowing the sails to be effortlessly and the rig to be adapted to any wind condition.

Interior:
When accessing the insides from the cockpit, the first thing we find - as in many classic designs - is the boat's complete doghouse. To portside we have the chart table, equipped with all the main controls and displays for navigation and communication instruments. To starboard there is a long seat perfect for resting while sharing the watches.
The interior of this boat is just as impressive as her exterior. It is finished in European mahogany wood. This wood, expressly selected by the owner himself, was subsequently cut in such a way that the grain is perfectly visible. The satin varnish chosen to protect most of the mahogany surfaces, in addition to helping the wood look very natural, makes the interior very cosy and warm. The ceilings and many areas of the sides and the cabins are covered in white tongue-and-groove lining, which perfectly combines with the wood.

The few elements of the interior where a glossy varnish has been used - very rightly -, in addition to the tables, are the furniture moldings and bulkheads that remain at mid-height. On one hand, these fittings function as handrails to be able to move around safely when the boat is sailing, and the glossy varnish is perfect for protecting them as it is resistant and easy to clean. Aesthetically it is also a success, since these mouldings make a contrast with the satin furniture and bulkheads, and make the whole aspect less flat and looking better. Every detail of the interiors has been thought to maintain the aesthetics of a classic ship with the comforts and functionality of a modern boat. The hatches with coamings, seen below deck, are beautiful. They provide a lot of light and ventilation to the interior, and are built with a strong and practical hardware, in the way in which things were built in the past.
Braveheart has 3 double cabins. The main cabin, with a toilet ensuite with a separate shower, is located at the bow. It is very spacious and has a lot of storage capacity. It has a large gorgeous hatch which provides a lot of light and ventilation, and two portholes in the hull that allow us to see the sea.

In the stern, on the sides, we have two cabins with bunk beds. One of them can accommodate three people, as it has a very large double bed in the lower area and a single bunk bed on the side, higher above it. The other cabin has a large single bed and a higher bunk bed. Following these cabins we find two complete toilets with an integrated shower and overhead hatches which provide light and ventilation.

Around the central part of the boat we can find the engine room. By decision of her owner, this cabin has enough height as to be able to stand straight very comfortably, and it has a comfortable access to all the installed equipment. These details are not common in classic boats, with clear limitations in the interior space. But it is very important for a boat like this, designed for ocean crossings, an easy access to the machines and other equipment, and in Braveheart that is completely granted. The autonomy of the engine is 1,300.

In the salon, we can find two independent seats on the port side with a small table, perfect for enjoying a good read or a chat with a good cup of tea (or a gin and tonic after a good sailing!, confirmed by the crew ;-). On the starboard side, we have the dining room with a large unique wooden table and a comfortable sofa, as well as two movable seats.
On the port side, there is a large U-shaped galley with a lot of storage capacity, a lot of countertop surfaces and all the necessary equipment. In front of the galley there are 2 large industrial-type fridges and a very robust freezer of the same kind.

Summing up, “Braveheart of Sark” is an absolute beauty. But she is also comfortable and functional, as well as fast, seaworthy and easy to use. The cockpit makes a point with its large size for a classic design. The atmosphere you can breath on this boat makes life on board a full sensorial pleasure. There's no need to say that this sailboat requires care, but thanks to the quality and attention during her building and the composites used, it is years ahead of similar metal boats. It is also important to explain that several refits have been carried out in recent years - including work on the engine, electronics, teak deck and rigging - so the boat is ready to face her next voyage. Just untie the ropes and set sails into the wind!
