A philosophy born in La Grande-Motte, becoming a given for the great journey

It all began in 1984, when Gérard Danson, a young architect, and Daniel Cailloux, an exceptional technician, left the Conati yard to give birth to a catamaran thought differently: fine hulls, contained weight, reduced windage.

The idea seemed almost heretical for the time — to make the catamaran a true sailing vessel, capable of facing the open sea rather than just following its edge. However, it quickly established itself: the very first Outremer 45 won the solo Transatlantic race, proving that this strange two-hulled boat could compete with the best monohulls on their own turf.

 

However, it was from 2007, when the Grand Large Yachting group took over the yard, that this philosophy truly flourished. Far from merely keeping pace with monohulls,

Outremer catamarans would surpass them: at equal wind speed, their crossings are made in times that few monohulls can hope to match.

On board, one sails flat — without the constant heel that tires the crew — in volumes and brightness that no monohull of the same length can offer.

 

And when the time comes to slip into a lagoon or anchor close to a beach, the retractable keels reduce the draft to a fraction of that of a fixed keel monohull, opening anchorages that others can only observe from afar.

Initially born as a strict 45-foot model, the design has evolved into its current 48-foot version.

Since 2024, the saga continues in Lorient, where all current Outremer 45s are built — a site that has already seen the 100th unit roll out of its workshops, a shining testament to the success this model has achieved among future great travelers.
